Design Engineer
Design Engineers in this role combine pixel-perfect front-end craftsmanship with strong design sensibility to build user-facing experiences for AI products. Working closely with designers and product teams, they own product surfaces end-to-end—from prototyping in code and validating with users to shipping production-quality interfaces with obsessive attention to performance, accessibility, and detail. These engineers typically work in fast-moving AI companies building consumer or creator-focused products, translating complex AI capabilities into intuitive, delightful interfaces that feel magical to users. They move fluidly between design tools and code, prototype rapidly in React/TypeScript, and champion the small details that elevate craft and experience across their entire product.
Skills
What companies are looking for in this role.
Translating design mockups and specifications into pixel-perfect, production-ready user interfaces using modern frontend frameworks
Designing and implementing micro-interactions, animations, and transitions that enhance user experience and visual feedback
Building and maintaining scalable design systems and reusable component libraries with clear APIs and documentation
Writing clean, maintainable, and performant frontend code with strong attention to code quality and architecture
Collaborating closely with designers to understand design intent and ensure fidelity during implementation
Prototyping interactive concepts and features directly in code to validate ideas and explore possibilities
Implementing accessible user interfaces that meet WCAG standards and best practices for inclusive design
Building responsive layouts that work across different screen sizes and devices with attention to visual hierarchy
Optimizing frontend performance including rendering efficiency, bundle size optimization, and interaction responsiveness
Establishing best practices and standards for frontend development, component architecture, and interaction patterns
Leveraging AI-assisted development tools and workflows to accelerate design-to-code processes and reduce iteration cycles
Designing interfaces and interactions for AI systems, agents, and generative media that make complex automation transparent and trustworthy
Working with LLMs and AI code generation tools as collaborative partners in the development process
Building tools and abstractions that improve developer productivity and internal engineering workflows
Making informed trade-offs between shipping speed and polish, knowing when to iterate versus when to refine
Communicating complex technical and design concepts effectively across design, engineering, and product teams
Demonstrating ownership and autonomy in driving projects from concept through production release
Mentoring and raising standards across engineering teams on design principles and implementation techniques
Validating design concepts and prototypes with real users through research and feedback loops
