AI data infrastructure and enterprise software company originally focused on data labeling and now spanning RLHF, model evaluation, and a GenAI Platform for deploying custom enterprise and government AI applications. Operates labeling subsidiaries Remotasks (computer vision, autonomous vehicles) and Outlier (LLM annotation), and runs the Safety, Evaluation and Alignment Lab — expanded in March 2026 into Scale Labs — which co-created benchmarks including Humanity's Last Exam. Holds contracts with the US Department of Defense and the US AI Safety Institute. Founded in 2016 by Alexandr Wang and Lucy Guo; in June 2025, Meta invested $14.3B for a 49% non-voting stake at a $29B valuation, Wang departed to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Droege became Interim CEO. Scale laid off approximately 14% of staff in July 2025 after major AI lab customers including OpenAI, Google, and xAI paused or reduced engagements over data confidentiality concerns. Scale remains an independent company.
